Interim Senior Legal Counsel

A highly respected public sector financial institution is seeking an experienced Senior Legal Counsel to join its collaborative and high-performing legal team on an initial contract running through to March 2027, with the potential for extension.

Operating at the intersection of government and global financial markets, this is a unique opportunity to contribute to a nationally significant function within a complex and fast-evolving market environment.

Your new role

This is a senior position within a lean but impactful legal function, reporting directly to the General Counsel. You will support a broad range of legal activities during a period of increased organisational demand, providing both strategic and operational legal advice across multiple practice areas responsibilities will include:

  • Advising on debt capital markets, money markets, derivatives, lending, and fund management activities
  • Drafting and supporting documentation for debt issuance programmes, including auctions, syndications, and tenders
  • Negotiating and managing key financial agreements, including industry-standard documentation (e. repo and derivatives agreements)
  • Monitoring regulatory and market developments, identifying impacts and advising stakeholders accordingly
  • Supporting commercial, contractual, and operational legal work across the organisation
  • Contributing to the development of legal processes, know-how, and internal tools
  • Managing relationships with external legal advisers where required


This role offers significant variety, senior stakeholder engagement, and the opportunity to shape the legal function within a critical financial institution.


What you'll need to succeed

  • Qualified lawyer (England & Wales or equivalent)
  • Strong technical expertise in either finance law (e. DCM, derivatives, lending) or public law
  • The ability to deliver high-quality, pragmatic advice on complex legal issues, including with senior stakeholders
  • Excellent judgement and a commercial, risk-aware approach
  • A proactive, "can-do" attitude with the ability to manage competing priorities effectively
  • Collaborative approach to working across teams

Experience working in or alongside the public sector or central government frameworks would be advantageous but is not essential.
